Our Process

How We Test & Review

Every product on Selecto goes through the same rigorous process before we recommend it. We buy our own products, test them for a minimum of two weeks, and only feature the ones we'd genuinely recommend to a friend. No sponsored placements. No pay-to-play. Here's exactly how it works.

Our 5-Step Process

Step 01

Research & Shortlist

We start by identifying the 15-25 top-selling and most-discussed products in each category. We read hundreds of user reviews, industry publications, Reddit threads, and expert forums to build our initial shortlist.

Step 02

Purchase & Unbox

We buy every product with our own money from regular retail channels — the same way you would. No manufacturer samples, no cherry-picked units. What we test is exactly what you'd receive.

Step 03

Hands-On Testing

Each product is used daily for a minimum of two weeks in real conditions. Wearables are worn. Kitchen tools are cooked with. Desk accessories live on our desks. We track performance, comfort, durability, and any quirks that emerge over time.

Step 04

Score & Compare

We rate each product across category-specific criteria (see our scoring below) and compare it directly against competitors in the same price range. Only products scoring 4.0 or above make it to the site.

Step 05

Publish & Update

Reviews are published with honest pros and cons. We revisit our picks quarterly — if a product drops in quality, gets discontinued, or a better option emerges, we update our recommendation. Every review shows when it was last verified.

What We Evaluate

Not every product category is judged the same way. A kitchen gadget and a fitness tracker have completely different criteria for success. But every product is evaluated on these universal factors, weighted by category:

CriteriaWhat We Look ForWeight
PerformanceDoes it do what it claims? How well does it perform its primary function compared to competitors?30%
Build QualityMaterials, construction, durability. Will it last beyond the return window?20%
ValuePrice relative to what you get. We compare against every competitor in the same range.20%
Ease of UseSetup time, learning curve, daily friction. How quickly can a normal person start using it?15%
Design & ComfortAesthetics, ergonomics, and how pleasant it is to use day after day.15%

Category-Specific Testing

Technology & Gadgets

Battery life measured under real usage (not manufacturer claims). Connectivity tested across multiple devices. Smart home products tested with Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit where applicable. Firmware updates monitored for 30 days post-purchase.

🧬

Health & Fitness

Wearables worn 24/7 for minimum 14 days. Accuracy compared against clinical or reference-grade equipment where possible. Comfort evaluated during sleep, exercise, and daily wear. Subscription costs factored into long-term value assessment.

🏠

Home & Kitchen

Kitchen tools tested with real recipes, not just demonstrations. Cleaning difficulty and dishwasher safety verified. Assembly time measured and documented. Noise levels measured with a decibel meter for motorized products.

✈️

Travel Gear

Tested on actual trips — flights, hotels, and transit. Packability measured (dimensions when stored). Weight verified on a kitchen scale. Durability assessed after multiple uses in real travel conditions.

Our Editorial Principles

No Sponsored Rankings

No brand can pay to appear on Selecto or influence their placement. Our recommendations are based solely on testing and research. The order products appear in is determined by our editorial team, not by commission rates.

Affiliate Transparency

We earn a commission when you purchase through our links — this is how we fund our testing and keep the site running. This never influences which products we recommend or how we rank them. If a product isn't good enough, it doesn't make the site, regardless of commission potential.

Real Cons, Not Fake Balance

Every product has drawbacks. We don't pad our reviews with vague cons to appear balanced — we identify the genuine weaknesses that might be dealbreakers for certain users. If a product's cons outweigh its pros for most people, we won't recommend it.

How Our Rating Works

Products are scored on a 1-5 scale across each criteria above, weighted by category. The final rating is a weighted average. Here's what the numbers mean:

RatingWhat It Means
4.7 – 5.0Exceptional. Best-in-class. We'd buy it again without hesitation.
4.4 – 4.6Excellent. Highly recommended with minor caveats.
4.0 – 4.3Very good. Solid pick with some trade-offs worth knowing about.
Below 4.0Not featured. Products scoring below 4.0 don't make it to the site.
