Oura Ring vs Garmin Venu 3S: Which Health Tracker Is Right for You?

Sleep Tracking: Oura Wins
This is Oura's specialty and it shows. Sleep stage detection (light, deep, REM) was consistently more accurate than the Garmin when we compared both against a clinical sleep study our tester participated in. Oura nailed REM timing within about five minutes; the Garmin was off by 15-20 minutes on some nights.
The ring form factor is a genuine advantage for sleep tracking. Wearing a watch to bed is something you get used to, but a ring you don't even notice. Oura's readiness score — which synthesizes sleep quality, resting heart rate, HRV, and body temperature — became the first thing several team members checked each morning.
Fitness Tracking: Garmin Wins (by a lot)
If you exercise regularly, the Garmin isn't just better — it's in a completely different league. Built-in GPS means accurate pace and route tracking for runs, hikes, and bike rides without carrying your phone. Over 30 sport profiles cover everything from yoga to skiing to open-water swimming.
The Oura Ring tracks basic activity (steps, calories, movement goals) but has no GPS, limited workout detection, and no real-time metrics. For anyone who runs, lifts, or does structured training, the Garmin is the obvious choice.
Design & Wearability
The Oura Ring looks like a normal ring. Most people won't even notice you're wearing a health tracker. It's titanium, weighs about 6 grams, and comes in multiple finishes. For people who don't want to look like they're wearing a gadget — or who already wear a traditional watch — this is a major advantage.
The Garmin Venu 3S is a 40mm smartwatch with a gorgeous AMOLED display. It's stylish for a smartwatch, but it's still visibly a smartwatch. If you're fine with that (or prefer having a screen), the display is beautiful and the real-time data during workouts is invaluable.
The Hidden Cost: Oura's Subscription
This is important. The Oura Ring costs $299 upfront — and then $5.99 per month for the Oura Membership, which unlocks the detailed insights that make the ring worth buying. Without the subscription, you get basic metrics that are honestly not worth $299.
Over two years, the true cost of ownership is $299 + $143.76 = $442.76. The Garmin costs $349.99 with no subscription, ever. So the Garmin is actually cheaper over time despite the higher sticker price.
