Our Review

The Echo Show 5 sits at the intersection of smart speaker and smart display, and does both well. Use it as a bedside clock with gradual wake-up lighting, a kitchen timer that shows recipes, or a video calling device. The 5.5" screen is sharp enough for quick glances but small enough that it doesn't dominate your nightstand. Camera shutter gives physical privacy control. Sound quality is decent for its size — not room-filling, but perfectly fine for podcasts and casual music.

Display & Smart Home Control

The 5.5-inch touchscreen is the Echo Show 5's secret weapon. It's sharp enough to read at a glance without being so large it feels intrusive on a nightstand or counter. The auto-brightness adapts well to dim bedrooms, and the new digital photo frame mode cycles through Amazon Photos or art when idle — a nice touch that makes it feel less like a gadget and more like a home accessory.

As a smart home hub, it handles Zigbee devices natively. You can view Ring camera feeds, control Philips Hue lights, adjust Nest thermostats, and run routines — all without opening a separate app. The split-screen view lets you monitor a camera feed while playing music simultaneously. The physical camera shutter gives peace of mind that no software toggle can replicate.

Sound Quality & Calls

Sound won't blow you away — the single downward-firing speaker tops out around modest party-in-a-small-room volume — but for morning news briefings, podcasts, and background music while cooking, it works. Alexa's voice recognition remains best-in-class; it picks up commands from across the room even when music is playing. Video calls via Alexa-to-Alexa, Zoom, or Skype are reliable with decent front-camera quality at 2MP.
