Ultrasonic vs. Evaporative: What Levoit Uses
Levoit uses ultrasonic technology — high-frequency vibrations vaporize water into a fine cool mist. The advantage over evaporative humidifiers is near-silence (ultrasonic units run at 25-30 dB) and immediate visible output. The tradeoff is "white dust" from mineral deposits if you use hard tap water — a fine white film that settles on surfaces near the unit. This is harmless but aesthetically annoying and easy to prevent by using distilled water. Most Levoit models include a demineralization filter that reduces (not eliminates) this with tap water.

Our Verdict
The quietest humidifier we've tested. At 28dB it's genuinely silent in a bedroom, and the top-fill design means refilling doesn't require any awkward disassembly. The 25-hour runtime on a single fill is excellent for the price.
How We Tested This
Run nightly for 3 weeks in a 180 sq ft bedroom. Noise measured with a decibel meter at 1, 3, and 6 feet. Humidity levels tracked with an independent hygrometer. Refill frequency and ease documented.
